I think the song is about stepping out and deciding to live your life to please Christ instead of other people. The phrase "new design" is reminiscent of "new creation" in 1 Corinthians 5:17 - "Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come." It talks about how living a life for Christ, and stepping out and standing for him, can be lonely.

See what you're doing to me Could've been you so easily You look the other way, Even though we were close the other day, And I'm still trying to get up this hill I need you just like a pill I've never felt this way before

I think this part may be referring to the feelings after sharing Christ with a non-Christian friend, who distances himself/herself from the singer afterward, even though the singer understands the other person and easily could have been them. The singer still feels some kind of dependence on their friend's approval even though they're taking a new direction and trying to live life as they truly are. Or it may possibly refer to a relationship with a Christian friend, who is not taking the step out in the same way the singer is, and looks away when the singer does "embarrassing" things like share his faith with others.
