i don't think this song is about relationships at all. i think it's a completely schizophrenic song written about an inner struggle with some sort of problem in your life, like drugs. "i've never seen the tide rise so fast"; the tide is a craving for a drug, this line means he's finally too addicted. "watch this pawn capture the queen" means that the addiction or problem snuck up like a pawn slowly moving across the chess board, until all of a sudden, the queen gets captured and your team is fucked. "well they said we'd tear ourselves apart" - people tell you to avoid drug problems and alcoholism because it'll fuck your life up, and this line represents not believing the nay-sayers at the beginning but eventually tearing the better and worse halves of yourself apart.
