I've always thought that this song might be from the point of the german soldiers retreating back to Berlin and realizing that they were mislead by their superiors. They now know they did bad things but they themselves are not bad people. It seems that the song is a sad reminicesnse of how they thought they were so close to victory for Germany but now they drink a toast to what could have been.
