I can relate to the kid in this story a lot. I'm guessing it's about Kirk because guitarists (like myself) are often quiet and somewhat anti-social at times. But we have confidence and can light up a room when we want to... with or without our instruments.
The kid's invisible because no one notices him. He was probably outcasted and has since learned to love the silence, much like an old man would.
"Got stuck where he did" - stunted his personality growth at the age he became invisible, but don't confuse that with maturity
"Inward he's grown" - he knows himself
"Suspicious of your touch" - paranoid because he trusts no one, probably cuz he sees through their lies (not a game player)... I doubt it has to do with child abuse
