No I'd agree actually, it could be about his mother. He's saying "You're one of God's better people" about his mother in his own shame, that he's not one of God's better people.

If you refer to the song 'Angels', many people thought that he was comparing his mother to angels. He does it in this song too;
"And everybody's going to step aside
