I'm not sure what was intended with this song, but I can really relate it to my life. I was recently came out to my parents, who have very fundamentalist beliefs. They refuse to accept me for who I am, so we are disconnected.
I feel that this song can be about someone who is denied their parents' love (and by extension, their home). The child sees a river as being in the care of its mother the sea, something that she is not able to experience.
I think despite the current situation, the child holds hope that some day her parents will accept the "life that she could call her own" and she will have a home again. I, too, hold the dream of reuniting with my parents.
