I think this could apply to anyone, really -- not just John or guys. It's mostly self-explanitory... The person has been with someone who left them, but realizes that maybe the break up hit them harder than they'd thought or that they want to get back together... and the singer realizes that anything good that could come of getting together again won't outweigh the pain that they felt and will feel later on.
