Surgical Saviour Lyrics

On my album Sacrificial Cake, there's a very warbly disorted, warped voice on the song "Surgical Savior." While my vocal was being recorded, the engineer actually pulled and stretched the physical tape to get that result:"Well, if the tape breaks, we'll try it again." It wasn't done by some expensive, high-tech processor. That's the way I have to work: "How can I accomplish this result?" And a lot of times, people ask "What effect did you use?" I didn't use an effect-that was me creating a weird voice as I "became" a character or "became" another creature. This has taken years of experiment-just knowing how to turn that ability on. I'm finally able to sing that way in the context of Swans and projects with Michael [Gira]. On his solo album it sounds like my voice was altered electronically, but no-it was just me using my throat and actually squeezing my vocal cords and manipulating my neck and putting my hands in my mouth and manipulating my face while being recorded. It's not gadgets!
