Trying to reclaim a vestige of his past glories, he finds the places irreversibly and unrecognizably changed, but takes some solace in his memory in the violet hour of his life, and in the knowledge that these places will remain ever inviolate to him. The last lines break my heart, as he tries vainly to relate these fond memories to his daughter, of "the useless boy and his dream."
