I agree that he's in love with the woman and he really believes in her and their relationship, but I think he's also sort of given up hope that she'll ever treat him right. It's almost as if he's a sucker for punishment so he's willing to take whatever she dishes out simply because it means he won't have to risk losing the one he loves. It's tragic. So I think Penkyismyhero has it right.

So in the end it seems as if he's settling for being mistreated because it's preferrable to the pain of losing her. He's kind of tossing his arms in the air and surrendering; basically saying "Do as you will to me as long I don't have to lose you."
