I think it's pretty clear in the lyrics of this song that by the second verse Darren is talking to himself. I've never heard the theory that the song was based off a movie, but that's definately interesting and it would make sense. I think this song is about a man who is desperately trying to convince himself that the relationship he's still clutching on to is history because she has moved on. Obviously, he knows it was a toxic relationship where she hurt him pretty badly, but still he loves her and can't get over her. I imagine this song being the man's inner voice, screaming at him to look at reality and realize that she doesn't love him anymore and that he's only wasting time and effort keeping her memory with him. By saying that memories are designed to fade, he's telling himself that she's forgotten him and it's time that he laid his memories of her to rest.
