I heard shot by both sides by magazine which uses the same riff first, and have to admit I preferred magazines song , buzzcocks have done many better songs, the A side promises was much better.
On that point - does anybody know what the story is between this song and Shot by Both Sides. I know Howard Devoto was in Buzzcocks and then started Magazine.

@sivilla My understanding is that Pete Shelley wrote the ascending guitar riff, then he and Devoto both used it in songs for their respective bands. He had a hand in writing "The Light Pours Out of Me" on the first Magazine album, too.
