wow. I felt exactly this way when I was 16. I don't think its a break up song though. I think its a song about a girl he just adores, he can't stand it anymore. Everyone has those people in their lives at some point. He wants to stop "but she looks so good today And she is so alive". He makes the mistake of telling her and she got freaked out and doesn't talk to him anymore, he's alone.
Now, he wishes "he'd never even fallen for her" that way they could still be friends because being friends or even not knowing each other is better than having her know what a dope he is. If he never would have tried to be with her there would still be hope that they could be. But there isn't and he can't stand it. But he's so over-romantic, sappy, and hopeless for this girl he still believes there is hope (check the last line). However, he knows there is no hope, we know there’s no hope but he loves this girl. There’s no easy answer, if there even is one.
