I agree, though I don't think that the people are nessiaty cynical. Bored maybe. But I got more of a... scared feeling. The line "other people break into a cold sweat..." implies that they laugh at him because the idea of these being the best days of their lives is just scary. They want to believe its gonna get better, casue what they got doesn't seem that special.
