I now believe that this song is reflective of the abuse Brian experienced while growing up. The lines:
She smells of the sun
and she's constantly saying that's it's all right, because lies sound so nice.
And like soil to seed goes, casting my fears aside...
indicate his mother saying that everything will be alright. He wants to trust her so much, and he believes in her words. So when he moves on to the next part:
She says, "The satellite is coming".
I pray the wrecking ball is waining
She says, "The satellite is coming. It's come to take us home."
the "satellite" is his father. A satellite could be something that watches over us, or that is far away yet still influental. The "wrecking ball" is the abuse that comes with the arrival of his father, so Brian is praying that for once, the abuse will subside. His father is distant except in his abuse.
The verse:
Still smells of the sun
and the light that brings healing is burning my eyes
and the dark seems so nice
and I'm choking on blessings that I can receive
I hide.
indicate that he is so used to hiding from his father that when his mother draws him out of hiding, it almost is difficult for him to do so.
