Long-view’s new song is absolutely amazing, melody-wise and lyrics-wise.
In terms of meaning, I think that this song is trying to express the state of mind a guy who wants a girl he either lost or can't have. All the signs he previously thought connected them, like "that look in her eye," is now nothing more than an illusion that he can no longer believe in.
Even in his dreams, the one place of escape and fantasy, the thought of her constantly haunts him, pulling him back down and waking him up. Yet when he goes back to sleep, her image is gone. She is but a fleeting image in his mind, flashing long enough to rouse his subconscious but disappearing the next. Perhaps this is a reflection of reality, either because he only saw/knew her for short time.
When he tries to maintain some shred of hope, he fails. Upon going back to sleep, he finds no one. This girl once was something he used to find solace in, yet now she has the opposite effect. The thought of her constantly depresses him and even in his dreams, she haunts him.
The last three lines just show how even he himself is resigned to this fact. The sheer impossibility of ever being with her is so much so that even in a dream, it is unattainable.
At least that’s what I think. By the way, the band has changed their name to Long-View with the hyphen since Longview was already taken. Is there any way to change this on SongMeanings?
