"Love is free, free is love"
John is obviously referring to free love, a common hippie/communist philosophy at the time.
Or it's simply a beautiful and simplistic song about love.
I think sometimes songs don't necessarily have a hidden political or otherwise meaning.
Sometimes they just are what they are.
But then again, maybe you're right. Iuno.
