Generally agree with you, Iberian. Though "the prisons of the cross" makes me think of inquisition, so the reference to Christ, would rather mean something else... I don't know, perhaps people being punished for their beliefs (other than Christian)...
Mentioned martyrs could also be those, who voluntarily gave their lives for their religion. Like the one (Catcholic saint) killed in Mecca because of his shouted insults at Mahomet.
