I think that he's using bells or a glockenspiel, purely because of the bright sound and the fact that a xylophone (being made out of wood) would be too cumbersome for just a recording at home. OR he may just be using a keyboard or immitation of a glockenspiel. It's Ben Gibbard: who knows?
Oh yeah... and this song is awesome. EVERYBODY (who doesn't know who it is) thinks it's a girl singing. I like the Magnetic Fields version and this one equally as much.
