I always took it to mean that when the opportunity that Buddy had been waiting for arose, he took it without a second thought, not even for his own safety (he would have had to have lost that fight to take the shot - "He never lost a fight on his ice he patrolled.") And the heavenly was just an apt way to sum up the whole experience, as the Finn "cold-cocked Buddy on his follow-through." That doesn't necessarily imply death, just game over.
