It sounds to me like he was smoking blunts, from cuban cigars, either by first removing the tobacco then adding weed, or using a mix of both since cuban cigars are supposedly so good.

"I sought to lose that cloud that's blacking out the sun" Weed makes you phase out life, blurring vision, and if done heavily blocks out most light except for your very narrow tunnel vision.

"Blacked out thoughts" Your mind does the same as your vision whilst being high, and you think of things that dont matter, but can seem quite philosophical.
