I think it's a sort of struggle the person is having, in the verses he's trying to find the answers to questions with no set answers like the purpose of life and he's drowning and burning for them inside because he's finding nothing and feels down about life, but then in the chorus he's fighting back saying not to be so cynical about everything and to live.
