personally, i figured the song is about how the singer messed up his life with his dad, and tried as hard as he could to right what he did. my friend however, thinks that it deals with a girl that he loves. i would think the title "Next of kin" and the line, "I'm sorry my father", would make it easier to understand what this song is about but i could be wrong.
