I think artslut is on the right track. It is about committment, the fear of it, and then the realization that he is rejecting someone he shouldn't.
He "blew it"...she wanted a committment and he said no way. The word "forever" just always meant "never" to him. But then, it hit him, it was right in front of him the whole time, "like the weight of feather it tore into me." What have I done? I really do love this person. Others are saying, don't take him back, but they don't have her best interest mind. Now, he does.
So, he not only wants her back, he's will to make the committment. And don't read too literally into the birds and bees thing...this is not about "shagging" someone. He's refering to how natural it will be to be with the person forever. He's saying, let's leave the troubled past behind, start over, I'm ready and it's the natural thing for us to do. Forever is no longer an unnatural concept.
