Initially I thought the song was about how his friends have lied to him and his girlfriend has done something to upset him, but I am beginning to wonder if maybe it's about his friends lying to him saying stuff like "It'll get better" etc to help him feel better when they know that really his girlfriend is a b*tch and his situation sucks.
I figure this song was written before he found out he had leukemia but the part that goes "I doubt the doctors are wrong, so I'll wait by a palm tree" that leads into the chorus also made me think about how all his friends were probably trying to cheer him up when he was in the hospital.
