I think peoples explanations are spot on, but i also see with adams lyrics, how certain songs fall into others, like, The devil's in the dreaming You see yourself descending from a building to the ground You watch the sky receding You spin to see the traffic rising up And it's so quiet You're surprised And then you wake that is a perfect explanation of what you'd see and feel if you you were to jump off a building which was mentioned in round here, but also, like the song black and blue it's about the feeling of dreaming about committing suicide but not actually going ahead with it. with this song , i agree with countmycrows and catchme about elizabeth believing her friends over him that he's been cheating while on tour, but it's also about the negative effect that it's having on him cos he loves her soo much, and nothing he can do or say will change her beliefs, that he's having severe nightmares that frankly would scare the hell out of me. It's a shame it takes so much pain and torment to produce the worlds greatest lyricist, but you can't help but feel for him
