My girlfriend got to talk with Chris Carabba after he played at a Beck concert in NC about 2 years ago. She said it was awesome because she was one of the only people at the concert that actually went to see Dashboard and she got to hang out with him for about an hour or so while Beck played.
She said that he told her that "Terpentine Chaser" is a recount from a bad time in and old relationship. Pretty much all of the songs on The Swiss Army Romance are about one girlfriend Chris had.
He told her that they were in a big fight outside of his house one day and she somehow knocked a paint can on his car or threw paint on it (sorry, I'm trying to recount this second hand).
Anyways, paint gets on the car, so he gets a rag and some terpentine to clean it off...all the while his girlfriend is still yelling at him. The next part gives me goosebumps - He said that the whole time he was practically crying as she is yelling at him.
That, plus the fumes from the rag were so strong that he said the only thing on his mind was finishing cleaning up his car so he could make her leave.
Picture this: she's verbally assaulting him, not caring that she just got paint all over his car, he's crying, not saying a word, just thinking in his head "I'm so done with this, oh God, get me out of this"
Well, I thought it was really cool. I remember it because when me and Paloma met, she was wearing a Cat's Cradle shirt, and I was like, "hey, I saw Dashboard play there back in 2001!" That started the whole convo. Man, I'm so ADD. Love the Song. Now it means so much more to me. Hope this clears anything up for anyone.
