Well, this song is obviously about a recently ended relationship. "Sad as it may be I'm glad it's over finally."

Contrast the beginning of the relationship - "Never said you'd promise anything. Never told to trust you blindly. Never thought you'd push me away." with the end of the relationship - "Never was I stronger than I'm now. Never felt this much a fool somehow. Never had much thought for myself."

I suppose that if there were one thing we could take away from the composers experience it would be that if both parties do not agree from the beginning on what type of relationship they want, one of them will end up saying "Never should've wept when you let go. Never thought you'd push me away."

The line "never had much thought for myself" can be an indication of the narrator's low self-esteem. He's not stupid but doesn't think enough of himself to avoid toxic relationships.
