when i heard this song i thought maybe it was about thinking about whether she should break away from a long-term relationship. but when i read the lyrics, i thought it doesn't necessarily need to refer to a romantic relationship, but one where two people have known each other for a long time and have been through a lot together, growing up and supporting each other. so in that sense the relationship is a sort of 'citadel', protecting her from the harsh real world.
but then for some reason perhaps the relationship goes sour and she thinks that maybe she needs to leave and live out on her own, but she doesn't know whether she can make it on her own coz the history of their relationship is holding her back.
