Although the song could be directed towards John Mayer, but i doubt considering i havn't heared of any grudges or anything like that...I think it's just a name used in the song, like saying average joe, or like a quote like another 'tom or harry'....the songs about a man, who gets famous and makes a lot of cash. He just spends it all on material objects and forgets the true meanings in life and that....and then one day...it's all gone, all the stuff he ever boughts, and most importantly his heart and soul....kinda like a musician selling out you know...
