To me it sounds as though one of his inspirations, or someone he really looked up to, some sort of an authority figure was suppose to help him out through a tough time, but then he relizes, that this person is just a liar is doing no good in his life, and only made problems worse.
Or it could be him reacting to a death, of one of his authority figures, and how he feels that the person let him down by dying, as if the authority figure was suppose to fix a problem but died before the person got the guts to help out the person who really looked up to him.
Again it could also be about some inspirational figure that steve(the singer), never actually go to see before but had been told stories about how this person is a great person, but later finds out that those stories are lies and that this person is worthless.
