okay well this is one of favourite songs of all time, I can relate it to my own experiences, but then again songs can be seen from many different points of view. "Disconnected, its the way that I wanted it to be" shows how she's put him in the past, he's gone, she's blocked off ALL contact with him, and thats what she wanted, she wanted nothing more to do with him. It's over and in the end for the better. "The Cult Electric is my favourite record of the week" ...she listening to the same sad record, cos obviously she doesn't feel okay...thats pretty self explanatory. "But I can't say that when everyone is so judgemental" -- if anyones ever been in love they'll know about all the things you can't say, no ones ever truthful about the way they feel and she can't be. I think when she's says everyones so judgemental, she's more using sarcasm, as in...he's judgemental. She can't say these things, whatever they may be, because they all judge her for them. "and I can't play back all the times when you were gentle, cos even you can't be true" ... all those times when he said he cared about her, she knows they were never real, she can't play them back to convince herself that she should persevere because she knows that it was never true, he said the things she wished he would, but he never truly meant them, and she knows that. "its astounding what love can do to a city, Laurel Canyon was the best place for you and me to be I chose the curtains and I dreamed a dream of domesticity What a freak you made of me"

She's remembering the past in those first two lines, and she says how she dreamed of all these beautiful things, things which were important to her, and he made her feel like she was insane, he never appreciated them, and he made these things which seemed so real to her, out to be meaningless bullshit, like she was just some raving lunatic (sorry :p lol).

"Now I'm on Zoloft because you told me I was crazy"...this again relates to the way that because she's in love with him, he can take her dreams and take the person that she is and convince her that she's insane, like somewhere along the way SHE screwed up, because he didn't appreciate what she had to say, he didn't understand it and he made her out to be crazy, she believed him. Now she's taking medication. "And I won't jump cause now I know you'd never catch me And I can't leave you because you swore you'd never let me But even you, talk shit too"...the first line shows how he never really cared, and if she fell he wouldn't be there to catch her, thats what she wanted from him, but she realises now he'll never love her. And he said he'd never let her leave him, but it wasn't true, it was all a fasade, it was simply what she wanted to hear, and when she says "even you talk shit too" I think that's also an indication of the way he used to tell her she "talked shit".

"It's January when I jumped the fence of your backyard Finish the fairy tale that you weren't drunk enough to start It's kind of scary when your lover leaves you for a movie star But I'm still in the dark"

the use of the word fairy-tale I think is because she wanted this fairy tale relationship with him, where he loved her, and she loved him, and they lived happily ever after, but she never had that, I'm also thinking that he probably only says the things which she wishes he would say when he's drunk, and she's ending this "fairy tale" before it could even begin. It also shows how he's leaving HER, for someone more important, or perhaps its just a metaphor and he's not leaving her at all, but cares more for other more extravagant woman, and that scares her, and she has so many thoughts and ideas but she's shadowed by her love for him, and still no one see's this other side of her, the "movie star side", not even him. You made a mistake here too, you missed out the "me" in "you have trained me to watch my back and drop my standards" ...this line also shows how she's in love with him and just trying to be who he wants her to be, and she's dropped all the beautiful things that she was, and she's become insecure and untrusting. And she no longer holds the same respect as she once had for him, this verse shows a turn around in her feelings, she wont bow down to him anymore, she won't compromise who she is for him ....well it's pretty self explanatory.

"And you will never have the chance to trace my features And you will never make me feel like such a loser And you can have the past 'cause I'm in love with the future" ...you'll never see what I am, you'll never love who I am, you'll never make me feel like an outcast because of it, you'll never make me hate myself again, I still love the future, I still have all the dreams and thoughts I had before any of this, and you'll never understand them or have them and thats your loss not myn. She see's a love without him, a better one for her. "And I have met a boy Who makes you look so shallow (I'm in love with the future) And there is so much time And so much space to travel (I'm in love with the future) And I will make the climb and I will kiss the gravel (I'm in love with the future)" this bit I didn't actually hear in the song, but this is fucking awesome, I didn't hear it, I thougt it was just the whispered "I'm in love with the future bit" and I couldn't make out the background. But I really love this part. It shows how she's moving on, and she's met someone who makes her dreams seem important, and she see's now how shallow he is, and how much more she has in store for her now. I love the line "watch me, watch me I'll touch the sky" because it shows how she's proving to him that what she is is worth something, and that despite the way he made her feel (like nothing) and despite how low he brought her, she'll rise again and "touch the sky"
