sigh... this is one of my favorite songs of theirs. the piano is great, it makes me imagine this green carpeted hallway, art deco-style hotel... i agree about the air of hope, the last verse is really touching.

For me, it's about a relationship that fell apart...and the narrator still holds feelings for the person he is singing to, but he's cheated on her, or just messed around a lot since they parted, and he's lamenting over the fact things can't go back to how they were, and he wishes they could. He seems to want to try to get past the bad parts no matter how hard it will be.
Like I mentioned in my previous comment, I imagine this song to be taking place inside of a hotel room where these two people are seeing each other for the first time in years, and talking about the past...tying up loose ends, trying to tie them into a bow.
