I think it's sort of the opposite of "Ain't This the Life?" which was in Urgh! A Music War! before Boingo had any albums, sort of like their first released song, whereas "Helpless" was included at the end of their last album (only on casette), and was sort of their "last released song".
It's just about a guy with an awful life and how his additude isn't making anything better. He thinks he's the greatest person on the face of the earth and deserves so much more, and everything he does, including matrocide, is excusable because of his awful life.
