IMO this song is just about yet another relationship or situation that did not work out, i.e., the wreck of the day. the line "the light's always red in the rearview" means you can't turn back.
but the song is all about conflict b/c she's leaving yet she says "i'd cheat destiny just to be near you" like she knows they aren't right for each other but she wants to be with him anyway.
even though she's says "i know i'm not falling in love" i think that's more like giving herself a pep talk; later she says "all my resistance will never be distance enough" meaning she can try to walk away but it probably won't help.
