Then he realizes that he has been stupid (I don't know why he was put in prison but I suspect this is what he is talking about) He says "And just when you think your done paying dues" Is sort of his way of saying that he thought he had gotten everything straight. He thought he had paid all his dues. Then he finds out that his past is haunting him. Also he says "and the day may come when you\ve got something to lose" I'm guessing this is his way of referring to his girlfriend, saying that he had never done any of this if he had known what would be taken away from him.
