I intepreted the song lyrics differently, maybe because this is sorta how a few relationships happened with me
anyway, I took the song as the singer seeing a girl he liked, a girl he treated wonderfully, who he was always there for, yet she was always with somebody else, somebody who "left her standing there". Then he shows how "his words were never meant" yet he's "still around" sort of saying, this is what you've been dealing with all alone, yet I've been right here waiting.
