i think he is trying to say that they have both been in hard relationships before and that they are both scared of getting hurt again...and that they'll never get anywhere if they don't just tell each other what they really mean. they can't really show what they mean to each other for fear of getting hurt...and so he thinks that she doesn't love him when she's with him...she just needs somebody
