I think sirsteven is right. I also think that in the beginning he is talking about living here on earth in sin "like forgery and larceny and my ill-gained revelry." But at the same time being a "religious church-goer" in "i recite these scripted lines..all i missed in all of this was you." he is missing out on knowing God and abusing forgiveness. THen he is realizing God calling him to leave that type of life and recieve his promises.
