I assumed it was based on a real news event from the dude at the beginning and hearing about this story inspired them to write a song about it... but I guess I'm wrong.

Just based off of a quick google search with a result from archival New York Times publications, on July 13th/14th, 1968, there was a group of hippies who took shelter in Boulder, CO, fearing that the asteroid Icarus would crash into the planet that same weekend and cause the end of the world, or at least cause intense natural disasters like earthquakes and reportedly “California sinking into the sea,” or something like that. So I do think the song was inspired by that, but I also think it has a deeper political meaning
