Im going off on a limb here, but it sounds like a guy wanting a girl, but hes not what shes looking for so he changes himself to for her("They claimed that the woods not right so the painted bright and it changed the equation") , but by the time he becomes what he thinks she wants, shes gone("They worked for years till they got this equation right and then it stopped breeding"). Could be wrong, but thats what i got out of it.
