Wow, at first I thought it was about drugs. I mean you can relate just about about every line to drugs. The first time I heard this, what stuck out to me was...
"Clip the wings that get you high, just leave them where they lie
And tell yourself, 'You'll be the death of me'"
...I think that means get rid of what is getting you high, and just leave them behind and never look back. And then the 2nd line in that is where he is trying to tell himself that, and tries to convince himself that this was the right choice.
