On the one hand, it seems as though the speaker is torn between multiple -- probably conflicting -- obligations. ("I don't know if i'm supposed to stay / Or i'm supposed to leave.") Idunno, maybe he wants to join a rock band and tour the world, but he still feels he has obligations at home that need to be met. On the other hand, he realizes the ultimate futility of his decision. ("...it don't matter anyway / 'Cause i know it's just a spell.") So no matter what he does, he feels it isn't going to make much of a difference or an impact on the world around him. And it's that quiet ambition -- that desire to change the world or to at least make his name known -- that ultimately drives him to go out in a literal "blaze of glory" in the final verse.
Either way, it's a fun little song. Takes me back to high school every time i hear it. =)
