I have to agree with machinegun a little on this. Socrates was put to death, some feel, because he chose reason over faith. IMO, man relies too heavily on his own reasoning and therefore cannot reconcile himself to God's commandments. God's commandments are simple yet we choose to reason our way around them when we only need to follow God. The "love of academic ability" is, in large part, what brings our culture down. That's not to say that knowledge should not be sought and that we should throw reason out the window. I merely believe that reason and knowledge should be secondary to faith.
