In the 3rd verse where he speaks of people going long, and going deep, I understood as that's the intensity of relationship he and the soul mate are looking for. then in the 5th verse where he describes "someone is out there looking for a heart, a home, etc." drives home the point, that there is another out there looking for the same type of connection with someone. the mental pic I get is imagining 2 people trying to find each other in a large crowd. As for the references of a possible prev. relationship, I agree it's possible but this is merely the impression I get and what the song means to me.
