You know it might be about mental facilities. I don't know if anyone is aware but they were in very poor condition not to long ago. Musicians like Adam Ant sang about this in fact after spending time in one. The lyrics like there were rats everywhere, feed me bread and water, chafing straight jacket might be quite litterally just that. Lyrics like I won't die in there, say to me that it might be part literal meaning.

I always enjoyed the "save me smiling jesus, get off that cross" because in my mind it means that we should do more than go to church, and wear a cross, but help our fellow man and become more understanding. Given his family and how they were perhaps they went to chruch every sunday but did not practice what they spoke.
