Martin Gore actually wrote this when he was a teenager. I've read somewhere he was about 14 or 15. Pretty impressive... First song recorded after Vince Clarkes departure. He originally wanted them to have Only you as a "goodbye gift", but they refused. Instead they released this one! :)

That would explain the not wanting to touch part. The line in the song is confusing otherwise with the regard to him not wanting to touch her.
