The person the song is about is from a small town where homosexuality doesn't exactly get annual parades so they move as far away as possible, start a new life, and forget completely about their past life. They completely surround themself with the new life, working, forgetting so they don't have to deal with the pain of leaving. This could also work for just someone who is different from everyone in their hometown and wants to run away as well.
