Im really not sure why this song cannot just be interpreted as an ode to an ancestor that he never had the chance to meet. The first verse might be seeing an old dust covered picture of the person with his parent (the 'common friend'). He asks questions from family members and is fascinated by he or she. I guess the biggest giveaway would just be the 'we share a name' phrase, which implies family and that he has seen his or her grave. Frankly this is much more meaningful and beautiful than another romance song, they are a dime a dozen.
