Nice point TLA... Never thought of it like that. I don't think it's literal. If you listen, the "How'd you get so low" is sung by a girl, towards this guy. I think this song is about a couple being stuck in this life, thats just passing by. The girl wants to start life, but the guy doesn't wanna leave this place. hence the shoplifting at the corner store. he's been doing that for years, and now the girl wants to start her life with him. Hence the "how'd you get so low", meaning that he doesn't seem to love her as much as he should. She is high on this romance, and saying How'd you get so low? The chorus(Me and you got a lot..) is about them on their way to the new life. The verses that the guy sings takes us through the story of their romance, from hanging around and shoplifting, to wondering if it would be so hard to just get up and leave. leave the job, leave the shitty apartment, and just go. the howd you get so lows i already explained, and then this verse is where the guy understands what she is saying:

Don't mind me. Me? I'm fine. I just get a little lost sometimes. But what I really meant to say, I couldn't live without you another day.

Great song by a great band
